چکیده

Recent years have seen an increasing interest in micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) and flapping flight in connection to that. The Delft University of Technology has developed a flapping wing MAV, “DelFly II”, which relies on a flapping bi-plane wing configuration for thrust and lift. The ultimate aim of the present research is to improve the flight performance of the DelFly II from both an aerodynamic and constructional perspective. This is pursued by a parametric wing geometry study in combination with a detailed aerodynamic and aeroelastic investigation. In the geometry study an improved wing geometry was found, where stiffeners are placed more outboard for a more rigid in-flight wing shape. The improved wing shows a 10% increase in the thrust-to-power ratio. Investigations into the swirling strength around the DelFly wing in hovering flight show a leading edge vortex (LEV) during the inand out-stroke. The LEV appears to be less stable than in insect flight, since some shedding of LEV is present. Flapping Wings with Micro Sensors and Flexible Framework to Modify the Aerodynamic Forces of a Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV)

The flight of birds or insects has fascinated scholars and physicists for many centuries. Flapping motion, as shown by many nature flyers, is the most efficient way of flying objects whose size are smaller than or around 6 inches. In this chapter, the author introduced how to use modern technology to fabricate the flapping wings for micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) with flexibility and smartness. T...

A Passively Stable Hovering Flapping Micro-Air Vehicle

Many insects and some birds can hover in place using flapping wing motion. Although this ability is key to making small scale aircraft, hovering flapping behavior has been difficult to reproduce artificially due to the challenging stability, power, and aeroelastic phenomena involved. A number of ornithopters have been demonstrated, some even as toys, nearly all of these designs, however, cannot...

An experimental investigation on the acoustic performance of a flapping wing Micro-Air-Vehicle

An experimental study was conducted to assess the acoustic performance of a two-winged Flapping-Wing Micro-Air-Vehicle (FW-MAV) with various wing materials and wing structure configurations for flapping flight applications. It was concluded that highly elastic materials could significantly reduce the flapping wing noise in a wide spectrum of audible frequencies. Furthermore, a dielectric elasto...

Modeling and Control of a Dragonfly-like Micro Aerial Vehicle

The purpose of this research is to model and control a dragonflylike flapping wing micro aerial vehicle (FWMAV). It is well known that micro aerial vehicle (MAV) designs can be classified as fixed wing, rotary wing and flapping wing. Fixed wing MAV is capable of fast forward flight, which is suitable for flying outdoor. Rotary wing MAV is suitable for movement at low speed. Recently, flapping w...

Flight Dynamic Stability of a Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle in Hover

This paper discusses a methodology of analyzing the flight dynamic stability of a flapping wing Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) in hover. The flexible flapping wings are modeled by a strain-based geometrically nonlinear beam formulation, coupled with an empirical aerodynamic formulation for load calculation on the wings surfaces. Wing flapping kinematics is described using a set of Euler angles. Nonlin...
